Teach a child to paint, then … they see, you see, we see

New work by a group of 11 – 17 year olds in Kampala, Uganda, members of the Imagine Us Here 2011 project Our Portraits, Our People. Jointly designed by Social Enterprise Africa and Kushinda, funded by Bayimba International Festival of Arts and individual supporters, brought to life by the child artists, nurtured by artists John Okot, Ruganzo Bruno, Alex Oboki and others, and coordinated by 15 year old group members Gilbert and Samuel

  2. The art these children have been doing has done more than is immediately obvious. Having a talent which distinguishes you from others gives a level of self confidence to the young people, which raises their own aspirations for themselves. Seeing as these are all slum-dwellers, this is very crucial, when so many are unemployed around them. The excitement they have when using and learning how to paint using colours has also helped them expand their horizons and be happier in their lives; some have even dramatically improved their scores at school, since they were chosen for the project. So small investments in projects like these have amazing impact for these adept children.
